Girl Scouts Online and in the News
MSNBC ran a story about how we've retooled and shifted priorities from teaching crafts and homemaking skills to teaching more practical things centered around community service and careers. See the video clip.

Also highlighted was the new web site called LMK. It's all about teaching girls internet security and is a product of the partnership between Girl Scouts and Microsoft.

The campaign includes an interactive Web site for girls, as well as an e-newsletter and web site for adults. Each month, the all-girl editorial board explores a different internet safety topic online and then shares what it learned in the e-newsletter, which is distributed to adults the following month.

Earth Day Service Project

It is with great excitement that we share the success of our 1st annual GSEP Green Project, sponsored by Exelon Power. GSEP set goals of 2,500 participants and 10,000 hours to make the world a better place. Over 4,000 Girl Scouts (both girls and adults) and 600 non-Girl Scout volunteers rolled up their sleeves and put in 16,000 hours of service between Saturday April 18th and Sunday, April 26th. If you were a registered participant of the GSEP Green Project and have completed your evaluation survey, your patches are available to be picked up at the location you indicated in your survey responses.

A message from our sponsor:
Exelon is committed to constantly improving our environmental performance. We believe we have a duty to be a positive presence in the community where we do business, and that corporate citizenship enhances shareholder value. Our support of GSEP's Green Project is clearly aligned with this corporate philanthropic philosophy.

Take The Lead

Honoring women of courage,
confidence and character
whose leadership makes
the world a better place.

Held in the spring to honor the time of our beginning ninety-seven years ago, our three awards ceremonies capture the past, present and future of the Girl Scout mission in a unique way. At each ceremony, which is hosted entirely by our Girl Scouts, hundreds of corporate, civic and philanthropic leaders honor their peers for their extraordinary leadership and community service.

In Philadelphia:
The 23rd annual Take The Lead event held March 24 in Philadelphia at the Four Seasons Hotel raised a remarkable $275,000, exceeding last year’s total. Some 400 people were moved by the program which honored four women leaders. Ann Meredith also announced that Kristen Hughes, a senior at the University of Pennsylvania and a Gold Award Girl Scout would receive the organization’s first Girl Scout fellowship. To see photos click here.

In Berks County:
The 13th Annual Take The Lead event held on March 10 in Reading, was a resounding success with nearly 300 in attendance including current and former honorees, corporate sponsors, community supporters and friends of GSEP. Closing with a $75,000 fund raising total, the evening surpassed the goal! The audience was moved by Girl Scout presenters who introduced each of the five Take The Lead award winners.  For photos please click here.

In the Lehigh Valley:
April 30, 2009
The 11th Annual Take The Lead event held on April 30th at the Holiday Inn Conference Center in Fogelsville, PA raised an astounding $110,000. The audience was inspired by the speeches given by the Girl Scout Presenters and honorees. To see photos click here.

GSEP Graphic Standards Manual
All Girl Scout products and communications materials, and the images and phrases featured on them, serve to enhance Girl Scouts’ brand voice and mission. We need to be clear and consistent about the messages we convey. Everyone in Girl Scouting has a role in protecting the Girl Scout name and
marks against unauthorized, inconsistent and unlicensed use to ensure that we speak with one voice.
This manual should be used as a guide. If you need master artwork or have any questions as to the application of these policies, please contact Jenny Kontos, Senior Designer, at jkontos@gsep.org or Rosemarie Jones, Creative Director, at rjones@gsep.org

Help Us Get Out the
Word About Girl Scouts

Do You Have A Story? Do you know of an extraordinary Girl Scout, troop, staff member or volunteer who should be in the news? Is there an upcoming event the GSEP community should know about? If so, we would love to hear your suggestions for possible use by news media or GSEP publications. Please send any story ideas, with any and all details, including contact information for the person, troop or event, to Noreen Shanfelter, Director of Communications at nshanfelter@gsep.org.

Help the Veterans History Project
Is your troop interested in helping to preserve veteran's stories? The Veterans History Project uses volunteers to help collect personal accounts of American war veterans so future generations can benefit from their stories. Congressman Sestak's office is supporting these efforts, and invites Girl Scout troops to attend a workshop in Delaware County on July 7th, led by an oral historian trained by the Library of Congress. The Gold Award is the highest honor that is conferred on a Girl Scout. Often three to six months or more in the making, the community project must be approved by a Gold Award committee and meet a pressing community need. After 75 Years, We Still Love Them
In 1932, a group of entrepreneurial Girl Scouts in Philadelphia persuaded local utility companies to sell home-baked cookies in their store front windows. In 1934, they engaged a baking company to produce them—and they were a hit. Two years later, councils around the country followed. The rest is delicious history. Approximately 250 people – from the general public, Girl Scouts, their leaders, staff, and volunteers, as well as parents, family, and friends, descended on the National Constitution Center on Sunday, March 1st to celebrate byplaying cookie games and eating a 75lb. Girl Scout cookie. Click here to see photos.

Want to see the winning acts? They are all available for viewing on facebook–join today and ask to be part of the GSEP group page. There you’ll find 350 other girls, parents, and leaders, sharing a common bond–interest in Girl Scouting.
